There are 2 important long weapons in modern/sport wushu. They are the staff/cudgel (棍 gun) and the spear(枪 qiang ).
The staff or cudgel is said to be one of the oldest weapons recorded in history. Long ago, monks used the staff to carry 2 water buckets across their shoulders. Any long stick can act as a staff. Monks in China are taught to use the staff for self-defence and to protect the temple premises.
The staff has to be strong, light and flexible. Typically, it is usually made of rattan or wax wood. The length of the staff should be about the same height as the practitioner.
棍术 gun shu (staff art) requires the practitioner to be agile and have strong arms. Excellent coordination is required to execute leaps and flips with this long weapon.
One of the main purpose of the staff is to increase the force, speed and distance of a strike. Proper training is necessary for the practitioner to his core strength to deliver force to the end of the staff. In combat, the staff can also be thrown at the opponent to attack or defend oneself.
