Bow Stance (Gong Bu) is one of the 5 main stances in modern Wushu. The origin of this stance is unclear. Some sources claim that it is named after the stance that an archer uses to shoot an arrow. Others say that the front leg position is bent like a bow and the back leg is straight like an arrow.
How to do the bow stance?
1. Either foot can be the leading foot in the bow stance.
2. The front foot should point straight forward while the front leg bends at a 90 degree angle.
3. The back foot is angled 45 degree outward and the back leg is straight.
4. 70% of your body weight is on the front foot while the remaining 30% is on the back foot.
5. Square your hips facing the front.
6. Keep your core strong with upper body upright. Hold your head up high with shoulders pulled slightly back. Look forward.
7. Hold bow stance for a minute.
The bow stance keeps the groin area protected and allows the practitioner to attack the opponent. Sometimes the back leg is brought forward to kick the opponent. The back leg gives the practitioner extra stability so he can punch more forcefully.
You can include the bow stance in your warm-up to increase leg strength and balance.
