This stance is called the Empty Stance (xu bu) because the front leg is ‘empty’ of any pressure. The entire body’s weight is on the back leg leaving the front leg free to perform fast kicks.
The Empty Stance is sometimes referred to as the Cat Stance. The position of the front foot resembles how a cat places its paw out to pounce on its prey.
How to do the empty stance?
1. Bend your right leg so the thigh is horizontal and knee is slightly in front of the foot.
2. Right foot must be firmly on the ground. Ensure that the right heel is not lifted.
3. Left leg is placed in front with the left big toe touching the ground. The left foot touches the ground without any pressure. Body weight is on the back leg.
4. Both knees are close together.
5. Lean slightly forward with a straight spine.
You can check if you are doing this stance correctly by lifting up the front leg slightly off the ground. Your stance should not be affected by that. If it is, you need to shift your weight to the back leg.
