The thirteen principles of Tai Chi is derived from the Eight Trigrams<\/strong> \u516b\u5366 (I-Ching) and the Five Elements<\/strong>\u4e94\u884c.<\/p>\n

The first eight principles are subtle energies\/forces applied while practicing Tai Chi. They are known as the Eight Gates. The first four are the Four Main Directions while the other four are the Corners.<\/p>\n

These eight primary energies form the foundation of every Tai Chi movement and its application during combat. A skilled Tai Chi practitioner is able to manifest any of the eight energies throughout the entire body when required. In combat, the Tai Chi practitioner is able to change from one energy to another in a fraction of a second.<\/p>\n

1. Peng \u63a4 \u2013 Outward Expansion (South\/Heaven)
\n2. Lu \u634b\u2013 Roll Back (North\/Earth)
\n3. Ji \u00a0\u6324 – Press Forward (West\/Water)
\n4. An \u6309 \u2013 Push Downward (East\/Fire)<\/p>\n

5. Cai \u91c7 \u2013 Pull Down \u00a0(SW\/Wind)
\n6. Lie \u6312\u2013 Split (NE\/Thunder)
\n7. Zhou \u8098- Elbow Stroke (SE\/Lake)
\n8. Kou \u9760\u2013 Shoulder Stroke \u00a0(NW\/Mountain)<\/p>\n

The last five principles are the five steps (footwork) which are based on the Five Elements. This five steps move the person\u2019s body around smoothly and with stability.<\/p>\n

\n13. Zhong Ding \u4e2d\u5b9a – Central Equilibrium (Earth)<\/p>\n
